VIÑA LA ROSA ‘LA CAPITANA’ BARREL RESERVE CARMENÈRE 2011, CACHAPOAL VALLEY: This is the type of wine that I am not really fancying, but it is very well-made and millions of consumers will love it. Why? Because it has a nice ruby red colour, a sensual aromatic power with loads of ripe red fruit, oaky tones and some spices on the back, lovely juicy, quite fresh, round and soft on the palate with a mellow and even sweetish finish. Nothing bad about that… But, why I don’t fancy this wine? May be because it is not really in balance and is too much jammy in its fruit and too ‘herbaceous’ in smell and taste. This is, to my humble opinion, a kind of old-fashioned carmenère, more on the ‘fresh cut green pepper’ nose and taste than on ‘ripe, slightly smoked pimentón’ that I like in a GREAT carmenère. Because of the quite firm and dominating, slightly bitter young tannins, you can serve this wine, cooled back to 14-16°C to enjoy it at home with some friends. * Pleasant and charming wine, nice value for money (€ 9.99 retail in NL).
Tierra Vientos Limited cabernet franc 2010
TIERRA VIENTOS LIMITED CABERNET FRANC 2010, CASABLANCA: To be honest, I never heard of this winery before, and a visit to their website was not really giving the answers to my questions. A quick round of Chilean wine friends (producers & press) was not really helping. Only one of my Chilean colleagues answered that she knew it and that it was one of our favourite CF from Casablanca… However, I had to taste it… Nice colour, deep and intense. Lovely aromatic nose, lots of ripe berries and stone fruits (red and black)… Very fresh and juicy on the palate, good structure, long and slightly mineral finish. Nice wine, but it gave me a strange feeling of ‘overdone’. Maybe it will get better after a few more years, but at this moment, I was not fully impressed by this Cabernet Franc from a winery who declares: “Each day we strive to achieve our single goal… to create World Class wines in Chile”. To my humble opinion, there is still a long way to go… ** Good wine with character (for € 18 retail in NL, you can get much better Chilean wines)
