VULCANIA is an international forum on white wines from volcanic soils, organized by the CONSORZIO TUTELA VINI SOAVE. On Friday June 8th the 4th edition of VULCANIA was attended by a big amount of wine producers and traders, geologists, well-known viticulture specialists, a respectable amount of Italian wine press and a dozen of International wine journalists. The symposium and thematic tasting were held inside the BORGO ROCCA SVEVA (a smaller quality winery belonging to the huge CANTINE DEL SOAVE cooperative) in the picturesque and historical city of SOAVE (Province of Verona).

For the international and a part of the Italian wine press, a ‘discovering’ trip was organized the days before and after VULCANIA by the Consorzio Tutela Vini Soave (Lucia Vesentini, Anna Dal Fiume, Giovanni Ponchia, Aldo Lorenzoni, Arturo Stochetti…) and by the neighbors of the Consorzio Vini D.O.C. Colli Euganei (Lisa Chilese, Presidente  Antonio Dal Santo…) and the ‘girls power and charm Team’ from Oenogastronomic communication office GHEUSIS (Cinzia Luxardo, Silvia Baratta).

WHY ‘VULCANIA’?

Well, officially speaking, this event is a kind of symposium, a big think-tank with national and international input, all around the ‘volcano factor’.

As the organization communicates it:

“The volcano in fact represents a wide-ranging interpretative key that can convey a wine’s values in an immediate way even to those who, as simple consumers or wine lovers, do not have a great deal of specific technical knowledge.”

Wow… Following with:

“This is a simplified method of communication which, thanks to the potency of this natural phenomenon,” (read: the volcano) “allows one to put across certain concepts without rendering them banal.”

This tsunami of quasi-intellectual marketing phrases could be translated as:

“How can we use the symbolic and the influence of the volcano to sell more Soave wines by increasing the originality of our image, without getting boring for the common wine consumer”.

To make it even more interesting, a conference and a nice geological and viticultural presentation were organized, as well as a serious tasting of white wines with volcanic soil as common denominator. That last part gives the whole project an international allure, which intends to make the story less ‘commercial’ and more ‘educative’.

Since the last Vinitaly edition in 2012, a new ‘volcanic’ club has been founded, the ASSOCIATION OF VOLCANIC APPELLATIONS. This new association stands for wines from Italian appellations like – from North to South – Lessini Durello, Gambellara, Soave, Colli Euganei, Pitigliano, Frascati, Campi Flegrei, Ischia, Vesuvio, Eolie, Etna, Pantelleria… and is open for other volcanic wine regions like Madeira, Japan, Oregon, Hawaii etc.

In times were globalization and standardization of all kind of products including wines seems to become more a rule than an exception, it is good to see that more and more people are fighting back to preserve their originality from extinction. Therefore, all my support and sympathy for this VULCANIA event!
