EARTHQUAKE CHILE AFFECTS WINE REGIONS TOO

Posted by Christian Callec on maandag, maart 1st, 2010

The terrible earthquake that shook Chile awake last week-end, has made hundreds casualties. More than 2 million people have been directly affected. Lots of them are now homeless. The infrastructure of the country is completely paralyzed. The coast stroke was hit by a violent tsunami. The earthquake itself destroyed or damaged the main and local roads and many important bridges. It will take weeks, may be months to get a real calculation of all damages done.

This will have big consequences for the wine industry as well. A few weeks before the harvest, in a historical year, where many special cuvées were planned for celebrating the ‘bicentenario’, 200 years of independence in Chile, no one can actually survey yet what is going to happen. How big are the damages in the vineyards? Surely, the wine regions Maule and Bío Bío are badly affected. Human losses, social and economical shock, big damages to bridges, roads and buildings… But other wine regions seem to have suffered, according to many sources, especially the regions of Casablanca, San Antonio / Leyda, Colchagua, Maipo, Cachapoal, Curico and Rapel. We do not know yet how bad the damages are, what will be the consequences on the 2010 harvest and on the planned harvest celebrations.
